A 2007 television pick and its nod to Okotoks

In April 2007 a television recommendation for a documentary called Saved by the Sun described solar power as clean but not yet cheap, and noted that a working example already stood just down the road at Drake Landing in Okotoks.

Event date: 2007-04-20

A short mention with a clear message

The recommendation was only a few lines long. It treated solar energy as a technology that had been promised for decades and had still not spread widely in North America. It then pointed to Drake Landing, where summer heat collected from the sun was held in the ground to warm houses through winter.

It is worth keeping on the site because it shows how the project looked to ordinary viewers. The neighbourhood was being offered as proof that the idea worked locally rather than something happening overseas. The same item grouped it with a handful of other programmes marked for Earth Day week, none of which had anything to do with the project.

Where the project stood in 2007

That spring the Energy Centre had just come into service, after ground was broken in 2005. The system was new, and the long run of measurements that would follow had barely begun. How the pieces fit together is laid out in how it works, for anyone who wants the mechanism behind the one-line summary. The 2007 construction timeline shows what was happening on site that year, from the Energy Centre to the street.

What came after

The later record bears out the confidence. Monitoring showed 97 per cent solar heating by 2012 and 100 per cent in the 2015-16 heating season; the figures are on the performance results page. The community was wound down from 2024, and most homes moved to natural-gas furnaces. Anyone wanting to know the present state of the buildings and the field should ask the Town of Okotoks or ATCO.

Quick answers

Was Drake Landing the subject of the documentary?

No. The 2007 recommendation presented the programme as a survey of solar developments and mentioned Drake Landing only as a local working example.

What did the 2007 note say about Drake Landing?

It said the Okotoks development stored solar heat gathered in summer underground and used it to heat the houses in winter.
