Who to ask about Drake Landing
This website is an independent archive, so it cannot answer questions about homes, billing or the heating system. The organisations that built and ran the community are the right place to start.
Which organisation answers which question
- Natural Resources Canada (CanmetENERGY): research, monitoring data and the technical papers described on our publications page.
- Town of Okotoks: the status of the Energy Centre, the borehole field and public land.
- ATCO Gas: how the district heating utility was operated and what replaced it.
- Sterling Homes: the design of the R-2000 houses.
- Enerworks: the solar collectors and hot water products.
- United Communities: the subdivision itself.
Each of these is introduced on the partners page, with its role in the project.
What this site cannot tell you
The community stopped operating as a solar neighbourhood. Heating was wound down from about 2020 and decommissioning began in 2024, with most homes moving to natural-gas furnaces. Who now owns the Energy Centre, what will happen to the underground storage field and how each house is heated today are questions this site has not been able to verify, so it does not guess. The Town of Okotoks and ATCO Gas are the sources to ask.
For the story as it stood, the overview and the explanation of the technology cover most of it.
Residents and visitors
The 52 houses are private homes, and the people who live there did not sign up to be a tourist stop. Please keep to public roads and do not photograph windows or garages up close. Anything you would like to know about the old photo galleries can be found in the photo archive, which now holds captions only.
About dlsc.ca
The site was rebuilt in the 2020s from archived copies of the original Drake Landing Solar Community website. It has no connection with the Town of Okotoks, any project partner or the residents, and nobody here handles enquiries about property, utilities or service.
If you are a student, researcher or writer, the performance results page summarises the verified numbers, and the news archive collects original digests of 2005 to 2010 coverage.
Quick answers
Is there a DLSC office I can call?
No. The original project office and web coordinator are gone, and dlsc.ca is run independently. Questions about the system are best sent to Natural Resources Canada, the Town of Okotoks or ATCO Gas.
Who knows the current status of the heating system?
The Town of Okotoks and ATCO Gas are the most likely to know. This archive only records that heating was wound down from about 2020 and decommissioning began in 2024.
Can I visit Drake Landing?
The streets are public, but the homes are private property and the Energy Centre is not a visitor attraction. The photo archive and explainer pages are a better way to see how it worked.
